Language: English/French
Vincent Breton, President, duBreton, Isabelle Gallant, Manager Insights & Corporate Social Responsibility, Fruit d’Or and Pascal Désilets, President General Manager, Fromagerie L’Ancetre to find out the current state of organic in Canada.
Organic business leaders share their industry insights into the organic market space. Moderated by the Canada Organic Trade Association in a lively panel discussion, industry experts share insights on their involvement in organic, the rewards and challenges, and their predictions for the future.
Panelists:
Pascal Désilets - President General Manager at Fromagerie l’Ancêtre
For nearly seven years, Pascal Désilets has had pivotal roles at Fromagerie l’Ancêtre including Chair of the Board of Directors. Over the last four years, Pascal has overseen the company activities as President General Manager.
He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and over 22 years of Management experience in different industries.
Fromagerie l’Ancêtre began in the mid 1980’s with nine families located in Quebec’s heartland that decided to practice organic farming. At that point, they had already realized that the agrochemical industry model was not sustainable.
L’Ancêtre began its processing operations 30 years ago with the goal of offering organic dairy products to Canadian consumers and prevent their precious milk from being integrated into the conventional system. Thereby, L’Ancêtre became the first company in Canada to offer organic cheese on a national level.
Currently, L’Ancêtre has approximately 75 employees and offers the largest range of organic cheese and butter in Canada. Their award-winning products continue to lead the category that it created 30 years ago.
Products are widely available across Canada under its national brand and private labels.
Fromagerie l’Ancêtre is still proudly owned by the same nine farmers families and continues to be managed according to its original values and vision.
Isabelle Gallant - Insights and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Fruit d’Or
Specialist in consumer insights, Isabelle has more than ten years of experience in the field of marketing research, including 6 years in the food industry specifically. She joined Fruit d'Or in 2021, where she is notably responsible for establishing a culture based on consumer insights and developing the company's social responsibility strategy.
Recognized for her enthusiasm in wanting to meet society's critical challenges, including the protection of ecosystems, she has had the pleasure of directing several studies aimed at understanding the environmental issues that concern consumers and the motivations underlying their behavior, purchase and consumption.
Holder of a Master's degree in management sciences, specializing in marketing, she is also a lecturer in marketing research at the School of Management Sciences of the University of Quebec in Montreal.
Vincent Breton - President, duBreton
Vincent Breton runs the duBreton family business as his father and grandfather did before him. Since the general store in Saint-Bernard in 1944, several investments and acquisitions have allowed duBreton to become the large company it is today, with its four processing plants, including one in the United States, two feed mills and several farms in Eastern Canada.
In 1999, Vincent Breton began the transition to organic, Certified Humane®, GAP 5-step® and antibiotic-free production. Thanks to this differentiation, duBreton became the North American leader in organic pork production.
In 2015, a major investment allowed the company to upgrade all its farms to organic, Certified Humane® and GAP 5-step® standards. An unprecedented commitment to organic agriculture in Canada.
Vincent Breton believes in sustainable and responsible agriculture. All his business decisions are oriented to connect farmers to consumers who value sustainability and animal welfare.
