Canada Celebrates 17 Years of Organic Month with Fresh Insights into a Growing Industry

OTTAWA, ON — As Canada marks the 17th annual Organic Month this September, the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) unveils new data showcasing the strength, resilience, and impact of the organic sector across the country. Organic Month, celebrated from September 1–30, is a national campaign that highlights the benefits of organic agriculture and products. This year’s release of 2025 Quick Facts paints a vivid picture of a sector that continues to grow in value and influence, even amid shifting market dynamics.

Organic sales surge past $9.75 Billion

Canadian consumers are making their values known at the checkout. In 2024, Canadians spent $9.75 billion on organic products, with organic food and beverage sales alone reaching $7.77 billion — an 8.21% increase from the previous year. This growth reflects a deepening commitment to health, sustainability, and transparency.

Organic agriculture isn’t just about what’s on your plate — it’s about the planet. Research continues to show that organic farming methods help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Every organic purchase supports a system that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and humane animal treatment.

Eating organic fruits and vegetables can boost antioxidant intake by 20–40%, and organic foods consistently show higher nutrient concentrations. With strict standards applied across all farm sizes and processing facilities, organic certification ensures minimal exposure to toxic chemicals and pesticides, offering Canadians a safer food choice.

Despite a slight decline in certified operators and acreage, the sector’s economic performance and consumer demand remain strong, signalling a robust future for organic in Canada.

Organic by the Numbers

  • 7,510 certified organic operations across Canada

  • 2.61 million certified organic acres

  • Ontario and Québec lead in certified processors and livestock producers

  • Exports of organic products hit $1.0 billion, a 15% increase from 2023

  • Imports surged to $990.7 million, up 45% from the previous year

About Organic

Organic agriculture is an internationally recognized model of food production that is guided by principles of sustainability and regulated standards and driven by consumer demand domestically and globally. Farmers who produce food in an organic system choose to do so without the interference of practices such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticide or use genetically engineered seeds. Organic farming by its very necessity is a driver of innovative and sustainable farming and food production techniques. Organic farmers have been the regenerative pioneers in such areas as biodiversity, soil health, cover cropping and crop rotations allowing them to produce quality food while also minimizing their impact on the environment.

About the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) - COTA is the membership-based trade association for the organic sector in Canada. COTA represents growers, shippers, processors, certifiers, farmers’ associations, distributors, importers, exporters, consultants, retailers and all points along the organic value chain. From seed to sale, we advocate on behalf of our members to encourage the continued growth of the organic sector.
