Celebrating 15 Years of the Canada Organic Regime (COR)

OTTAWA, Canada, June 26, 2024 - This year marks a significant milestone for the Canada Organic Regime (COR), the Government of Canada’s regulated system for organic products, as we celebrate 15 years since the federal government began enforcing organic claims in Canada. The Canada Organic logo has become a globally trusted symbol of organic integrity and the sector’s unwavering commitment to quality and sustainability, reflecting adherence to the principles outlined in the Canadian Organic Standards.

Organic production involves more than just no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides or GMOs. It is a holistic system designed to optimize the productivity and health of diverse communities within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. What this entails is clearly defined, regulated and enforced by government, and recognized by 35 trading countries. Therefore, the management practices for the entire supply chain and described in the Canadian Organic Standards are foundational, carefully selected, rigorously followed and verified.

The 15th anniversary celebrations will kick off a week before June 30, 2024 (the date when COR enabling regulations came into effect) and culminate on the anniversary day. Additionally, the festivities will continue during Organic Month in September, offering multiple opportunities to celebrate this milestone.

This anniversary affords us the occasion to reflect on a once-niche industry that blossomed to a value over $10 billion. It is a time to honour trailblazers, steadfast supporters, researchers, new producers and innovators in the sector. Looking ahead to the next 15 years, consumer education around the organic food movement and the significance of the COR logo will be important, as well as continued learning and research advancements.

Join us in celebrating this momentous occasion by sharing posts with the hashtag #15canadaorganic and using the “15 years of COR” logo in your promotions. Let's continue to support and grow the organic movement together!
