  3. COTA welcomes new Liberal government, looks ahead to strengthening Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector
April 30, 2025

Ottawa, Canada – The Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Rural Economic Development Kody Blois, and the Liberal Party of Canada for its election victory. We also extend our appreciation to all outgoing representatives for their service and welcome new and returning Members of Parliament.

Strong voter engagement during the election reflects the urgency of today’s trade, environmental, and social challenges. The need for collaboration across parties and strategic investment—especially in Canada’s agri-food sector – to build resilience and long-term competitiveness has never been greater.

Canada’s organic sector represents a key strategic opportunity for diversifying markets, strengthening trade, and increasing domestic resilience, economic growth, and agri-food sector sustainability. COTA—alongside its partners at the Canadian Organic Alliance and across the organic value chain—looks forward to working with all parties to develop a comprehensive National Organic Strategy. This strategy must empower organic farmers and agri-businesses to manage emerging risks, seize new opportunities, and build a stronger organic sector for the future.

About the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA)

COTA is the membership-based trade association for the organic sector in Canada. COTA represents growers, shippers, processors, certifiers, farmers’ associations, distributors, importers, exporters, consultants, retailers and all points along the organic value chain. From seed to sale, we advocate on behalf of our members to encourage the continued growth of the organic sector.

About the Canadian Organic Alliance (COA)

COA includes the three national organic associations: Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA), Canadian Organic Growers (COG), and the Organic Federation of Canada (OFC). Together, we proudly represent over 7,500 organic operators across Canada, collaborating on issues of shared importance and working closely with our provincial/territorial partners.
